  15. <p>     DIED. James M. Gavin, 82, legendary paratroop commander who
  16. became an early critic of the Vietnam War; in Baltimore. As an
  17. officer with the 82nd Airborne Division, Gavin parachuted with
  18. his troops during battles in Sicily, Normandy and the
  19. Netherlands and became known as "the jumping general." After
  20. retiring from the Army, Gavin twice served as President
  21. Kennedy's ambassador to France. After a 1967 visit to Viet Nam,
  22. he urged negotiations to end the war "by any means available."
